LONDON (Sporting Alert) – Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce has retained her 100 metres Olympic Games title, following her brilliant run inside the Olympic Stadium on Saturday night.
The Jamaican, who rocketed from the blocks to destroy a strong field in Beijing in 2008, didn’t get the same blistering start in London, but showed speed endurance over the closing metres to win the gold medal in 10.75 seconds, beating American champion and world gold medallist Carmelita Jeter, who clocked 10.78 for the silver.
Jamaica finished with two medals in the event, as Veronica Campbell-Brown ran 10.81 for the bronze medal in a very fast race, which saw the top six athletes breaking the 11-seconds barrier.
Americans Tianna Madison (10.85) and Allyson Felix (10.89) and Trinidad and Tobago’s Kelly-Ann Baptiste (10.94) were also below 11 seconds.
It was also sweet joy for Britain athletes Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis and Greg Rutherford, who all won gold medals on the night as well.
Farah timed his run perfectly and then outsprinted his challenges in the final metres to win the men’s 10,000m in 27:30.42, beating his training partner, American Galen Rupp, who ran 27:30.90.
Rutherford had a leap of 8.31m to win the men’s Long Jump, while Ennis achieved a national record of 6955points to win the women’s heptathlon.
