This year’s staging will take place from July 19-24, and the IAAF website reports that the host is on course to welcome one of the biggest groups of athletes in the history of the championships.
A total of 1,518 athletes, including 832 men and 686 women – have been entered to compete at IAAF World U20 Championships Bydgoszcz 2016, which is the second-biggest of this age group thus far.
To date, only the Barcelona 2012 edition, which entertained 1566 athletes, has attracted more competitors, while this year’s competition will surpass the figures from the 2008 edition, which was also held in Bydgoszcz.
Some 160 IAAF member federations have confirmed their participation – which is also set to be one of the most attended. Beijing 2006, where 176 countries gathered, is still the biggest edition.
The action gets under way on Tuesday morning at 9:30 am, (3:30 am ET), with the start of the men’s Decathlon U20, with qualifications in the men’s Shot Put scheduled to go off at 3:35 am ET.
The first open event action on the track will be the women’s 3000 metres Steeplechase heats, which starts at 3:55 am.
Also on the schedule in the morning session is the men’s 1500m and women’s 800m heats, as well as the heats of the men’s 100m dash.
The evening session, which gets going at 5:00 pm local time (11:00 am ET), starts with the women’s Pole Vault qualification, while the women’s 400m heats and women’s Discus Throw qualification are also on the list.
There are three finals slated for Tuesday’s Day 1; the men’s Shot Put and the 10,000m and the women’s 10,000m Race Walk Final.
