Bahamian top female runner Tonique Williams Darling, the reigning Olympic champion and 2005 world gold medallist from Helsinki, Finland, has announced she is expecting a child and will not defend her Olympic title in Beijing this summer.

Williams-Darling broke the silence Tuesday night, following numerous calls from her teammates, including top male 400-metres runner Chris Brown, to give an explanation as to why she was not competing.

"For a long time, I wasn't in a happy place but I'm in a happy place now," the veteran quarter-miler who became Bahamas’ first individual gold medalist in Olympic, said.

"I had some medical issues this year and Dennis and I were expecting our first child."
