Report – Real Madrid To Battle United For David Silva

By Omar Allen

Real Madrid is set to challenge Manchester United for the signature of Valencia star David Silva.

Reports are claiming that Madrid are ready to make a £22m bid on the Spanish international before the start of the World Cup to fend off competition from the English champions.

Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly been tracking the 24-year-old winger for more than a year and has made him one of his main summer targets.

However, Real Madrid are determined to out bid the the Old Trafford side.

Liverpool and Barcelona are also believed to be interested in the player.

Valencia are demanding closer to £30m but may have to settle for less as there have been few concrete bids and Real Madrid are the only club ready to pay £20m-plus.

I felt a lot of things and, as I said, I’m living a dream. The atmosphere was incredible with all the fans singing. It was fantastic to see.

I just like to enjoy myself. I want to win every day and I hope I can do great things.

You’ve met Sir Alex – what were your impressions of the manager?

Manchester United Defender Nemanja Vidic Out For Ten Days

Sir Alex Ferguson will have the rare luxury of a fully fit back four for the trip to Birmingham on Saturday, although the United boss must do without Nemanja Vidic for up to ten days.

The Serbian visited a specialist on Wednesday for a full diagnosis of the nerve problem down the side of his right leg which ruled him out of the FA Cup third round defeat to Leeds. However, the injury isn’t considered serious and Vidic could return for the Carling Cup semi-final, first leg tie with Manchester City at Eastlands on Tuesday 19 January.

“During the warm-up against Leeds, he felt a problem in the nerve,” explained Sir Alex. “It’s something which has been a recent problem for him and he just didn’t feel confident enough to play. I understand that because it’s painful. We sent him to a specialist to get the problem diagnosed and we know what exercises he needs to do now. It’s not a long-term issue and we can control it.”

On Saturday the Reds will still be without first-choice men Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar, who remains in Holland. But Jonny Evans and Wes Brown are both fit and will occupy the two centre-back positions at St. Andrew’s against Alex McLeish’s in-form side.

The centre-half situation looks a lot healthier than in recent weeks, however, and it could be significantly bolstered in the next fortnight with Vidic’s impending return and news that Ferdinand is possibly only two weeks away from resuming duties for the first time since defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on 25 October.

Another player making a significant strides towards full recovery is Owen Hargreaves. The midfielder, who has been out for 16 months following double knee surgery, has started training with the Reserves.

Carlos Tevez Runs Away With Monthly Award

Carlos Tevez’s inspired December performances as the Blues’ goalscoring talisman made him an absolute shoo-in for the Etihad Player of the Month award.

The little Argentine striker went from dynamic to dynamite as he recorded an eight-goal haul that  inevitably saw him race away with the award when you came to cast your Etihad votes.

Carlos collected 57 per cent of the thousands of votes to take the title by a landslide with previous winner and fans’ favourite Craig Bellamy, fine few weeks that he had, polling 11 per cent to finish second.

Mr Reliability Nigel de Jong, whose consistent midfield performances this season have put him in the frame every month, had his supporters again to take third place with eight per cent.

But there was no denying Tevez from the night he snapped up the vital opener in the 3-0 demolition of Carling Cup visitors Arsenal then followed up with a strike to help sink Chelsea.

His double at Bolton in a 3-3 thriller just seemed to whet Carlito’s appetite. After Sunderland restricted him to a penalty in City’s 4-3 win, he scored the goal that sealed Roberto Mancini’s debut win as manager then finished the month with another pair at Wolves.

Etihad and City would once again like to thank fans for their tremendous reponse. The competition winner is Anne-Marie Mockridge from Ashton Under Lyne, who has been selected from all the entrants who nominated Carlos.

Anne-Marie will present him with the winner’s champagne and lead proceedings for an exclusive mcfc.co.uk video interview later this month. She has supported City for more than 30 years and said: “I’m over the blue moon! I couldn’t have asked for a better start to 2010.”
