Manchester United level with Chelsea at the top with win over Wolves

MANCHESTER — Manchester United went back to winning ways when goals by Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia saw the hosts to an easy 3-0 victory over Wolves in their Premier League fixture at Old Trafford Tuesday evening.

The win took Sir Alex Ferguson’s men to 37 points, the same as Chelsea who head the table, however, on goal difference.

Rooney from the spot

United took the lead when Rooney fired home from the penalty spot before a Vidic header made it 2-0 at the break.

Rooney scored his 13th goal of the campaign after defender Ronald Zubar blatantly punched the ball away from a corner kick and referee Steve Bennett was right on spot to see.

The England international stepped up and blast the ball past American goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, into the right hand corner of the goal after 30 minutes.

Vidic doubled United lead just before the break with a powerhouse header that Hahnemann failed to keep out to give.

Valencia made it 3-0 after 60 minutes after Dimitar Berbatov showed his magic touches with a neat looking back flip for the travelling Ecuador international to hit one time.

Meanwhile, goals Emile Heskey in the first half and James Milner in the second helped Aston Villa to a 2-0 win over Sunderland on the road at Stadium of Light. Heskey scored in the 24th minute and then Milner secured full points with a strike in the 61st minute. Lorik Cana received a red card for Sunderland in the 78th min.

Elsewhere Cameron Jerome scored twice for Birmingham in their 2-1 home win over against Blackburn Rovers who had Ryan Nelsen on the scoring sheet, while Ivan Klasnic continued is scoring touch in Bolton’s comprehensive 3-1 victory over the struggling West Ham United.

Chung-yong Lee and Gary Cahill were the other scorers for hosts, while Alessandro Diamanti was on target for West Ham.
