Meseret Defar claimed the world 5,000 metres indoor record with a brilliant display of solo running at the GE Galan meeting in Stockholm on Wednesday night.
Defar enjoyed a more successful return to the Swedish capital where last summer she frustratingly missed the 5,000m outdoor mark of her fellow Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba by little over a second.
It was another stellar display from Defar whose time of 14 minutes 24.37 seconds obliterated the previous mark of 14min 27.42sec set by Dibaba in Boston two years ago.
Steeplechaser Paul Koech followed up his runaway victory in Paris last Friday by unsurprisingly dominating the 3,000m flat race – winning in a world-leading mark for the year and personal best time of seven minutes 32.80 seconds.
But his fellow Kenyan, Olympic 800m champion Wilfred Bungei, was totally out of form in being blown away by Yuriy Borzakovskiy.
The Russian won a slow tactical race in 1min 48.13sec with Bungei relegated to fifth position in a time of 1min 50.11sec.
Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker continued his unbeaten season by winning with a height of 5.86m from Pavel Gerasimov, the Russian posting a lifetime best of 5.81m.
