SHANGHAI, China — Former 110m hurdles Olympic champion Liu Xiang of China will make a return to action at a low key meet, but will not take part in the World Championships, according to his coach.
Liu, who limped off the track with a hamstring injury without even clearing a single hurdle at the Olympics Games last summer, is recovering well from surgery on his injured ankle, but will be fit in time to defend his world crown in August.
"From what we can observe from the current situation, we can say that Liu Xiang is generally recovering well," Sun Haiping was quoted as saying.
"But if he wants to take part in big international meets or important competitions, he is not able to do so under his current conditions.
Earlier this year Sun had map out the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix in September as the likely place for Chinese track star to make his return.
Things, however, could change, with Sun staying on the caution side, so as to not put his pupil’s career in jeopardy.
"If his injury recurs, we can say that his athletics career will end," Sun said.
Liu is expected to begin normal practice session once he had fully recovered from the injury.
