Gay wins 100m at Gateshead Grand Prix

GATESHEAD — American world silver medalist Tyson Gay got back to his winning ways after the World Championships with a 100 metres victory at the UKA Aviva British Grand Prix meeting, held at the Gateshead International Stadium on Monday.

Gay eased to victory in 10.15seconds, in a -2.0m/s head wind

"It felt pretty good," Gay said after his win.

On finishing second to Bolt at the world championships, the American said: "I feel great with my second place finish in Berlin. I did my best, but it just wasn’t good enough."

World bronze medalist Carmelita Jeter was a comfortable winner in the women’s 100 metres in 11.08-seconds, running into a slight headwind.

The American, who won impressively in Zurich on Friday, got off to a fast start and pulled away from the challenging field to beat Bahamians Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie (11.26) and Chandra Sturrup (11.34).

World champion Allyson Felix was an easy winner over the 200m with 23.13secs, after being pushed back by a strong -3.4m/s wind. Another American LaShawn Merritt stayed unbeaten this season in his specialty, after dominating the men 400m dash with a winning effort of 45.11.

"I’m feeling great, I had a great season last year at the Olympic Games and this year the main focus was the World Championships," Merritt said.

"I went to Berlin, left everything on the track and now I’ve the world champion. I ran 44.2 in Zurich so I’m in good shape and I want to end the season on a high at the World Athletics Final in Greece."

Great Britain’s Martyn Rooney ran a strong race to take second in 45.47, just edging out Olympic 400m hurdles champion Angelo Taylor (45.50).

Jamaica’s world champion over the 100m hurdles Brigitte Foster-Hylton, won that discipline with a 12.88secs in poor conditions. Following her home was Canada’s Perdita Felicien, at 12.95secs. The pair were the only two faster than 13-seconds.
