South Africa’s 800-meter world champion Caster Semenya was welcomed by thousands of fans at Johannesburg’s main airport today as President Jacob Zuma said that she had been humiliated by athletics’ governing body’s handling of a dispute over her gender.

The government has written to the International Association of Athletics Federations to “register our displeasure” with the organization, Zuma said in a televised press conference from the capital, Pretoria, today.

“It is one thing to seek to ascertain whether or not an athlete has an unfair advantage over others,” Zuma said after meeting with Semenya and other South African medalists. “But it is another to publicly humiliate an honest, professional and competent athlete.” …Read More
