Martin Lel led 1-2 Kenyan finish in the Great North Run, finishing 12 seconds ahead of Kiplimo Kimutai for his second triumph in the road race.

Lel finished the half-marathon in 59 minutes, 32 seconds on Sunday to repeat his victory from two years ago. Third place in the 13.1-mile race went to two-time marathon world champion Jaouad Gharib of Morocco in 1:00.05.

Portugal’s Jessica Augusto broke away from the field to win the women’s race in 1:09.08. Former winner Berhane Adere of Ethiopia finished second 34 seconds behind. Ana Dulce Felix of Portugal placed third.
