Tyson Gay pulled out the men’s 100 metres at the U.S. Championships on Friday because of an injury he sustained.
Gay is now unlikely to challenge arch rival Usain Bolt over this distance at the IAAF World Championship later this summer.
The American 2007 sprint double champion, has been struggling with injuries this season.
Following his less than superior effort in the preliminary round of the 100 on Thursday, he complained of an injured right hip, which forced him to miss his semi-final heat Friday evening.
It will now left to be seen if Gay will actually race in the 200m at these championships.
The 100m world-leader is on the start list, but stated earlier this month that he wouldn’t compete at the longer distance.
Should he not contest this event, he will likely be on the sidelines at the worlds.
