DAEGU (Sporting Alert) — Asafa Powell will not be part of the Jamaican team that will look to defend its 4x100m title at the World Championships in Daegu.
This was the statement from his agent Paul Doyle, who confirmed the news on Thursday.
Powell picked up a groin injury and was forced to miss the 100m individual event – which was won by fellow countryman Yohan Blake – after Usain Bolt false-started.
But there were hopes that the former world record holder would have been fit enough to run anchor on the sprint relay – something Doyle says won’t happen.
“He would need to take a few more days to fully recover,” Doyle told The Associated Press.
“It would be too much of a risk to the team. Asafa does not want that responsibility on his shoulders.”
