Tyson Gay clocks 10.00 to win B race in New York

NEW YORK — American sprinter Tyson Gay opened his season with an impressive 10.00 seconds performance to win the “B” race of the men’s 100 metres dash at the adidas Grand Prix – an IAAF Diamond League meeting in New York on Saturday.

Gay, who has been bothered by injuries, which forced him to do hip surgery last season, ran his time in a -1.5 m/s headwind.

The performance will certainly give the 2007 world sprinter double champion lots of confidence heading into the U.S. trials, where he will step up against the likes of Justin Gatlin, the fastest American this season and Walter Dix.

In New York, Jamaica’s Kemar Bailey-Cole was second in 10.30, with his fellow countryman Jason Young stopping the clock at the same time.

World champion Yohan Blake of Jamaica will take a stab at Usain Bolt’s world-leading time of 9.76 seconds in the main event.
