Of course the main attention will come from the sprinting events on both sides, especially with the likes of Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay, Allyson Felix, Sanya Richards-Ross and Carmelita Jeter in their respective line-ups.
However, there should be some highlighted moments in the distance events as well, particularly in the women’s women 1500m and 5000m, where a certain prodigy Mary Cain, a Junior at Bronxville High, stands a glorious chance of making the team in both events.
The 17-year-old is being coached by world renowned long/middle distance coach Alberto Salazar and he also backs her to make the world championship team for Moscow, Russia.
Her goal is the 1500m, which she covered in 4:04.62 this season, but Salazar also wants her to race in the 5,000m, where she has a personal best of 15:45.46 – should something goes wrong in her main race.
In the meantime, 2004 Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner will be hoping to find his best form this season at the trial as he seeks to win a place on the men’s 400m team.
Wariner has been struggling this year will need to overcome his sluggish campaign to beat out the likes of Bryshon Nellum, LaShawn Merritt, Tony McQuay and Manteo Mitchell.
The men’s 5000m will have Galen Rupp and Chris Derrick, who will both race in the men’s 10,000m as well, in addition to Bernard Lagat.
Felix has been scratched from the women’s 100m, as she’s yet to master the event and will concentrate on just running her specialty, the 200m, while Jeter, who has been battling with injury problems this season, will only race in the 100m.
