Asafa Powell of Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s former 100 metres world record holder Asafa Powell has failed a drug test, reports in his native and BBC Sports are reporting on Sunday.

Powell, the 2006 Commonwealth Games 100m gold medal, was apparently tested at the Jamaica National Championships in Kingston, last month.

The Jamaica Gleaner on Sunday confirmed that the handlers for Powell confirmed the 30-year-old had indeed tested positive for a banned substance.

Another MVP athlete, Sherone Simpson, the 2008 Olympic Games silver medallist, has also failed a drug test.

The 2006 Commonwealth Games 200m champion said on Sunday that she had tested positive for a stimulant at last month’s trials.

It is understood that the representatives for Powell and Simpson will release a statement sometime soon.
