Sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye is among the nine athletes named in the Trinidad and Tobago team to represent the country at the World Indoor Championships at Portland 2016.
Ahye, who recently flashed to a national record-equalling time of 7.10 seconds when winning the women’s 60m dash at the Jablonec Indoor Gala last Saturday, is one of the two women named in the squad.
She will be seeking to improve on the sixth-place finish she accomplished in the final at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland.
The time by Ahye over the weekend, is joint sixth-fastest for the women’s 60m this season behind Netherlands’ Dafne Schippers world-leading mark of 7.00 secs.
Also in the squad for the World Indoor Championships is shot putter Cleopatra Borel.
The experienced Borel, who has an indoor personal best mark of 19.48m, is yet to make a her indoor debut this season, so it will be interesting to see what kind of form she will bring into the championships.
Meanwhile, quarter-milers Lalonde Gordon and Deon Lendore who have two of the top four fastest 400m times this season, head things up on the men’s side.
Gordon, the double Olympic bronze medallist, has a seasonal best time of 45.51 seconds. He finished fifth at World Indoor Championships in the 2014 final.
In the meantime, Lendore’s quickest time this season is sitting at 45.56.
Short dash sprinter Rondel Sorillo and hurdler Mikel Thomas are also in the seven-member men’s team.
There will also be a men’s 4x400m relay team competing that the championships, which will run from March 17-20.
