KINGSTON, Jamaica – Selected results from the 2016 MVP track and field meeting at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday (16).
It was a season breakout meeting for Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake, who worked his way to a new world-leading time of 9.95 seconds to win the men’s 100m.
Olympic 200m bronze medallist Warren Weir (JAM) was also in good touch when stepping down in distant to run 10.07secs for the second quickest time on the day.
Blake, the 2011 IAAF World Championships gold medallist, is working his way back from hamstring setbacks and he would be encourage by this performance.
The 26-year-old revealed earlier this month that his gold heading into this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio is to replicate or better the double silver medals he won at the 2012 London Games.
Of course Blake will need to go through a certain Usain Bolt, who is not only the world record holder in both the 100m and 200m, but a man who is looking to close out what is expected to be his final Olympic Games in style.
Antiguan Miguel Francis won the men’s 200m in a solid 20.11 secs, which is just outside his 20.05 PB.
Other notable results came in the men’s 400m hurdles from Insert Whyte, who ran 49.39, while Racers Track Club quartet ran 38.45 secs to win the men’s 4x100m.
On the women’s side Jamaican Jura Levy ran a solid 11.25 secs to win the 100m, World Championships bronze medallist Shericka Jackson took the 400m in 52.10, while former junior standout Anneisha Mclaughlin-Whitby won the 200m with a time of 22.78.
