Jeter, Symmonds OUT Of U.S. Olympic Trials

June 30, 2016 by Steve Campbell 1 Comment

EUGENE – Sprinter Carmelita Jeter and middle distance runner Nick Symmonds will both miss the U.S. Olympic Game Team Trials after losing fitness battles.

Both athletes confirmed on Thursday that they have withdrawn from the trials, which get underway on Friday, because of injuries.

Jeter, who won a silver medal in the women’s 100m, bronze medal in the 200m and anchored the U.S. 4x100m relay team to gold in a world record time at the London 2012 Olympics, has failed to shake off a quadriceps problem and had to pull out of the trials.

“Unfortunately due to me re-exaggerating my left quad I will not be at 2016 Olympic trials,” Jeter said in a video post on her Instagram.

“It has been a rough two years for me, having two torn quads and a quad surgery.”

Jeter is the second-fastest woman ever over the 100m with a time of 10.64 seconds.

Meanwhile, 800m runner Symmonds, the 2013 World Championships silver medallist and 2012 two-lap finallist, will also miss the U.S. Olympic Games Trials due to an ankle injury.

The 32-year-old was hoping to make his third Olympic appearance, but will instead watch the trials from the sidelines.

“This ankle has taken me to 2 Olympic Games, but it will not take me to a 3rd,” Symmonds posted on Twitter.

“Forced to withdraw from Olympic trials.”
