RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Usain Bolt became the first man in Olympic Games history to win three straight 100m titles, after the world record holder easily defended his title at Rio 2016 on Sunday night.
Bolt, who won gold at the 2008 and 2012 Games, trailed his rival Justin Gatlin in the opening metres, but powered pass the American to take the gold medal in a season best time of 9.81 seconds.
“I knew I was going to win from the semi-finals,” Bolt told reporters. “I felt good.”
Meanwhile, Gatlin finished with the silver medal in 9.89secs, with Canadian Andre de Grasse taking third in 9.91.
London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Yohan Blake was fourth in 9.93.
