TAMPERE, Finland — Damion Thomas and Briana Williams struck gold for Jamaica in the evening session on Day 3 at the 2018 World U20 Championships on Thursday (12).
Thomas led a 1-2 finish for Jamaica in the men’s 110m hurdles, while Williams stunned American favourite Twanisha Terry to win the women’s 100m gold.
Thomas entered the Tampere 2018 championships as the pick for the top podium place and he delivered, pulling away from his teammate to take the world title in 13.16 seconds.
Bennett made sure it was a 1-2 for the Caribbean nation as he latched on the silver medal in 13.33 secs – holding off Japan’s Shunsuke Izumiya, who ran a personal best time of 13.38 for the bronze.
Meanwhile, Williams used to bullet start to upset pre-race favourite Terry in the women’s 100m, stopping the clock at 11.16 seconds.
Terry was already the pre-race favourite with a seeded time of 10.99 seconds, and she backed that up with a championship record performance of 11.03 secs to win her semi-final heat earlier in the day.
However, the American champion was surprised by the super start by Williams and ran out of real estate in her chase back and had to settle for silver in 11.19.
Great Britain’s Kristal Awuah held her form to secure third in 11.37, just ahead of Germany’s Keshia Kwadwo (11.41).
Jamaica had earlier won bronze in the men’s Long Jump on Wednesday through Wayne Pinnock with 7.90m.
