Shaunae Miller-Uibo posted a new personal best and world-leading time of 22.40 seconds to capture the women’s 200m title at the American Track League Meeting #2 at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, AR. on Sunday.
Miller-Uibo Opens With World-Leading 200m
Miller-Uibo, who was making her first appearance of the season and racing over 200m indoors for the first since 2013 during her collegiate career, easily improved her previous personal best from 23.26, while lowering the previous 2021 indoor best of 22.90 by American Tamara Clark.
Racing in the meager field of just two athletes, Miller-Uibo quickly moved past Shamier Little of the USA in the opening meters of the contest and then held her form to clock an impressive Bahamian national record and career-best.
Little, who is familiarly known for her 400m hurdle prowess, ran very well in the end to finish with an indoor lifetime best of 23.40, despite running most of the race on her own and looking at the back of Miller-Uibo, who owns the world record over 300m indoors at 35.45 seconds.
Caribbean Athletes 200m Sweep
It was a Caribbean sweep of the 200m races as Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Jereem Richards took the honor in the men’s race after topping his heat in 20.74. His countryman Deon Lendore, who won the first heat in 20.89, finished second overall.
Meanwhile, despite not producing another world record to win the men’s Shot Put, USA’s Ryan Crouser finished the day as one of the top performers at the American Track League Meeting #2.
Crouser, who broke the indoor world record last Sunday in the first meeting of the series, returned with an impressive 22.66m winning display this week. The Olympic champion also had a mark of 22.65m, with his six attempt-series having just one measure under 22 meters.
USA’s Payton Otterdahl improved his season’s best to 21.27m for second place with third going to another American, Nick Ponzio, who also did a seasonal best of 20.18m for third.
Hoppel Dominant 800m Run
Bryce Hoppel of the USA shot to the top of the world top-list this season when he produced a blistering time of 1:44.37 on his way to setting a new personal best to win the men’s 800m.
The 23-yaer-old is now the second fastest-ever American indoors over the distance and was just 0.15 adrift of the 1:44.22 American record by Donavan Brazier.
Charlie Da’Vall Grice of Great Britain set a personal best of 1:45.62 for second place with USA’s Erik Sowinski also crossing the line in a new career-best of 1:45.69 for third.
Americans Maurice Eaddy and Mikiah Brisco finished on top in the 60m sprints.
Eaddy ran 6.63 secs for first place in the men’s race to beat countryman Marvin Bracy (6.66) and Mario Burke of Barbados (6.68).
In the women’s race, Brisco posted 7.19 for the win, with Hannah Cunliffe taking second in 7.26.
World indoor pole vault champion Sandi Morris opened her 2021 campaign with a world-leading 4.81m clearance.
