American star sprinter Michael Norman is slated to open his season in the 400m at the 2021 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix – World Athletics Indoor Tour gold-level event at the NYC Parks’ Ocean Breeze Athletic, in Staten Island on Saturday (13).
Norman, who is a versatile sprinter with sub-10, sub-20 and sub-44 seconds performances over the 100m, 200m and 400m, owns a personal best of 44.52 seconds, which was set at the 2018 at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The time eclipsed previous fastest time to ever run indoors by Kerron Clement, a 44.57, set in 2005.
The last time Norman featured in the 400m indoors was during his collegiate career with the University of Southern California in 2018.
Rai Benjamin, the 400m hurdles World Championships silver medalist from Doha 2019, is among the candidates down to challenge Norman at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Like his American compatriot, Benjamin will also be opening his 2021 season and he will be hoping to improve on his 46.59 personal best from 2015.
After opening his campaign with a 21.20 seconds performance in the 200m, USA’s Vernon Norwood will face the starter’s gun in a 400m race for the first time this year.
Experienced Guyanese sprinter Winston George will look to build on his 300m winning performance in New York in early January when he takes the track this weekend, while NCAA Indoor champion from 2019, Tyrell Richard, will also join the quality field.
