Jackline Chelal wins 2023 Zurich Maratón de Sevilla

The following is a list of the top 20 finishers in the Men’s and Women’s Marathon, along with their nationality and time at the 2023 Zurich Maraton de Sevilla, a World Athletics Elite Label road race, held on Sunday (19). Racing over one of the flattest loop-course in the world, Kenya’s Jackline Chelal and Ethiopia’s Gadisa Birhanu triumphed with times of 2:20:29 and 2:04:59, respectively.

Both winners recorded big lifetime bests, while the men’s race featured standout depth as six men went sub-2:06:00, and end with the fastest four men’s time in the world this year, including the world-leading time. Gadisa Birhanu won the men’s title with a performance of 2:04:59 to just fall short of the 2:04:43 course record, set by Asrar Abderehman (ETH) in 2022, with Kabede Wami (2:05:19) and Mekuant Ayenew (2:05:24) completing the all-Ethiopian podium.

On the women’s side, Chelal ran a big lifetime best of 2:20:29, bettering her former personal best of 2:29:22, set in Madrid in September 2021. The Kenyan topped a pair of Ethiopians –Aberu Ayana Mulisa and Urge Diro Soboka for the gold medal, with her rivals finishing with personal bests of 2:21:54 and 2:23:05, respectively, in second and third.
