BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Arkansas State track and field teams have made history by securing both the men’s and women’s team titles for the fourth consecutive season at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama.
On Tuesday, at Birmingham CrossPlex, the Red Wolves claimed the top spot on both leaderboards, becoming the first program to sweep the championship four years in a row since Middle Tennessee accomplished the same feat in 2001-04.
With 174.5 points after all 17 completed scored events, the Arkansas State men’s team clinched the title, recording the third-highest score in the conference’s history. – Read more: When is the 2023 SEC Indoor Championships and how to watch?
They finished 48 points ahead of the runner-up Louisiana (126.5), with South Alabama and Texas State coming in third and fourth, respectively, with 120.5 and 111.5 points. ULM took the fifth spot, with 51 points.
Meanwhile, the Arkansas State women’s team finished with 106.5 points, beating Coastal Carolina (76.5) by 30 points. Texas State finished third with 73 points, followed by South Alabama with 58 points, and Georgia Southern with 56 points in fifth place.
The Red Wolves’ Director of Track and Field and Cross Country, Dr. Jim Patchell, has guided the team to a combined 24 conference titles between the men’s and women’s cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field programs, according to the school’s official website.
With this latest accomplishment, the Arkansas State program is now the all-time winningest team in conference indoor history, securing a total of 11 men’s titles and eight women’s crowns.
