
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Noah Lyles, the title favorite, advanced to the semi-final of the men’s 60m on Day 2 at the 2023 USATF Indoor Championships with a win in heat 1. He clocked 6.60 seconds, the third-fastest time from the heats.
Brandon Carnes and JT Smith were the top qualifiers for the semi-finals after both men posted 6.59 seconds to finish 1-2 in heat 3. With the absence of Christian Coleman and Trayvon Bromell, the men’s 60m race at the 2023 USATF Indoor Championships is wide open.
When world record holder Coleman and current world leader Bromell revealed that they were not participating in the men’s 60m, Lyles emerged as the favorite for the title.
The two-time world 200m champion had a slow start in Heat 1, but he used his excellent finishing speed to power past the field and win the heat in 6.60 seconds, securing his spot in the semis.
Brandon Carnes and JT Smith were the fastest qualifiers from the heat. Carnes ran a season’s best time and was awarded the win after a photo finish, but Smith remained optimistic about his chances.
Meanwhile, Kirk Wilson Jr. won the second heat and secured his place in the semis with 6.66 seconds, while Isaiah Trousil finished second with 6.68 seconds.
Coby Hilton and Cravon Gillespie also advanced to the semis with times of 6.68 and 6.71 seconds, respectively.
The semi-finals and final of the event will take place on Saturday, with the final taking place later in the day.
The stage is now set for what promises to be two exciting semi-final races, with Lyles, Carnes, Smith, Wilson Jr., Trousil, Hilton, Gillespie, and others all vying for a spot in the final.
