VENLO, Netherlands (March 26) – Thousands of runners took part in the 2023 Wehr Venloop Half-Marathon on Sunday, with the course record broken in the men’s race and three women running sub-1:09:00 despite missing out on breaking the women’s record.
Organizers reported a significant increase in finishers, from 5,016 last year to 7,813 this year, while Hillary Kipchirchir of Kenya led the pack in the men’s race, setting a new personal best of 59:20 and breaking the men’s course record of 59:44 set by Kenyans Geoffrey Yegon in 2016 and Stephen Kiprop in 2018. – Read more: Publix Atlanta Half Marathon 2023 results; wins for Chepkirui and Kidanu
Kenyans dominated the men’s race, with Isaiyah Lasoi finishing second with a personal best time of 59:27 and Josphat Kiprotich taking third with a time of 59:41 to round out the podium places. Eritrea’s Samson Amare and Morocco’s Yakoub Labquira rounded out the top five with respective times of 1:00:24 and 1:00:47.
In the women’s division, Betelihem Afenigus of Ethiopia took first place after clocking a time of 1:08:27 to lead an Ethiopia sweep of the podium spots. Afenigus was followed home by Medhin Gebreslassie and Rediet Daniel who finished with times of 1:08:38 and 1:08:46, respectively for second and third.
None of the women were able to break the course record of 1:07:49, which was set by Kenya’s Nancy Kiprop in 2018.
The Wehr Venloop Half-Marathon 2023 attracted runners from around the world, including participants from Ethiopia, Kenya, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
