WACO, Texas (21, April) – Alyssa Wilson won the women’s Hammer Throw event at the Michael Johnson Invitational on Friday, April 21. The 24-year-old athlete dominated the competition with a season-best throw of 71.84 meters (235-08) in the third round, making it her second win from as many appearances in the event this season.
Wilson performed impressively throughout the competition. She opened with a throw of 69.02m, which would have been enough to win the event. But she extended her lead in the second round with a throw of 69.94m. She then threw 70.02m and 71.73m in the fourth and fifth rounds, respectively.
Although she missed breaking her own stadium record of 73.20m, which she set last year, her winning mark was the fifth-best in her career, behind her personal best of 74.78m, achieved last June at the NCAA Championships in Oregon. The runner-up was freshman Elisabet Rut Runarsdottir of Texas State, who achieved a mark of 62.12m in the fifth round.
Taylor Latimer of Nebraska took third place with a throw of 61.68m to round out the podium places today. Other notable finishers included Nebraska’s fourth-place finisher, Tanessa Morris, with 61.16m, and her teammate Hillevi Carlsson, who completed the top five with an effort of 60.00m.
