Daniel Simiu Ebenyo of Kenya looks on after a race

ISTANBUL, Turkey, April 30 – Purity Temutai Komen and Daniel Simiu Ebenyo emerged victorious in the 2023 Istanbul Half Marathon on Sunday (30), as Kenyan runners were again dominant in another World Athletics road running event this weekend.

Komen secured the win in the women’s race with a personal best time of 1:06:30, defeating 2019 world marathon champion Ruth Chepngetich who clocked in at 1:07:18. The top three positions in the women’s race were all held by Kenyan runners, with Evaline Chirchir finishing third with a time of 1:07:31. Bosena Mulatie (1:07:43) of Ethiopia and Tigist Gezahagn (1:08:49) also completed the top five. Read more: Results from the 2023 Berlin Half Marathon; McColgan, Sawe take crowns

In the men’s race, Ebenyo ran an impressive time of 59:52 to take the top spot on the podium. The Commonwealth Games 10,000m silver medalist led the way to the finishing line, with Morocco’s Hicham Amghar finishing second, the only other runner to finish in under an hour, at 59:58.

Ethiopia’s Haftu Teklu secured third place with a time of 1:00:03, while Kenyan runners Charles Kipkurui Langat and Vincent Kipkemoi rounded out the top five with times of 1:00:07 and 1:00:09, respectively.

The 2023 Istanbul Half Marathon was a World Athletics Label Road Race Gold event and attracted a number top runners. Among the shocks on the day were the defeat of Ruth Chepngetich in the women’s race, while I was a little surprised to only see two men running sub-60 minutes today.
