Dutchwoman Hassan recovered from a mid-race setback to win the women’s race in her marathon debut, finishing with a time of 2:18:33. After experiencing an early setback, Hassan displayed impressive patience, slowly cutting into the gap between herself and the front runners. Eventually, she caught up to the lead group, broke away with Alemu Megertu of Ethiopia and Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir –before finally injecting a burst of speed in the final 600 meters to claim a remarkable victory.
Kiptum’s victory in only his second marathon was just as impressive. Breaking away from the pack, he sprinted home to post the second-fastest time in history, breaking Eliud Kipchoge’s course record. The 23-year-old missed the world record by a mere 16 seconds, solidifying his place as one of the world’s best marathon runners.
