DES MOINES, IA, April 26 – Ryan Crouser emerged victorious in the Men’s Shot Put title at the Drake Relays on Wednesday night after throwing 22.42 meters. At the same time, Tripp Piperi and Maggie Ewen combined to win the first-ever Drake Relays Shot Put Mixed Team Competition, with a total throw of 40.90m. In the women’s shot put, American indoor record holder Chase Ealey claimed the crown with a big effort in the 4th and 6th rounds.

Crouser Continues To Impress At Drake

The historic Drake Fieldhouse was electric as Crouser, the reigning World Athletics Outdoor champion and Olympic gold medalist, recorded the second and third-best world indoor throws of 2023. The American had three throws that exceeded the 22-meter mark, including the competition’s best mark of 22.42m on his first attempt. He also managed throws of 22.30m and 22.02m.

Although Crouser scratched his other three attempts, the 30-year-old now boasts 201 career efforts of at least 22 meters in the shot put, including 31 indoors. Moreover, he has recorded 15 marks that have surpassed the 22-meter mark in his career in Des Moines.

On the other hand, after a slow start to the competition, Chase Ealey came alive in the fourth round to throw 19.54 meters and win the women’s contest. She repeated that effort in the sixth round to cement the title.

Record Throw For Thomas-Dodd

Danniel Thomas-Dodd of Jamaica set a national indoor record of 19.52m with her final attempt to claim second place, while USA’s Maggie Ewen finished third with 19.45m, and Jessica Woodard threw 18.10m for fourth.

In the men’s competition, Tripp Piperi secured second place with a throw of 21.45m, followed by Nigerian Chuk Enekwechi with 20.81m and Italy’s Nick Ponzio with 20.59m.

The first-ever Drake Relays Shot Put Mixed Team Competition was won by Tripp Piperi and Maggie Ewen, who combined to throw a total of 40.90m. Piperi had a personal best throw of 21.45m, while Ewen managed a throw of 19.45m.

The competition, which included four teams, was a welcomed addition to the 2023 Drake Relays, providing a new and exciting element to the annual event. Competition continues at Drake Stadium on Thursday with the Distance Carnival Night.
