BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (May 12) – Britton Wilson made history again on Friday, running a blistering NCAA record time of 49.40 seconds in the preliminaries of the women’s 400m at the 2023 SEC Outdoor Championships held here at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium. The talented athlete from Arkansas shattered the previous collegiate record of 49.51 seconds she set just last month at the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, by taking an impressive .11 seconds off her own mark.

“I love it,” exclaimed Wilson, the star from Arkansas. “I like to run the prelims like they are the final.” She further revealed, “I have my vision board,” and expressed her target for the day was to aim for a time of 49.60 seconds. She easily accomplished that and clocked the fastest time by an American in almost eight years.

In addition to her incredible achievement, Wilson’s winning time also demolished the previous meeting record of 49.84 seconds, set by former Texas A&M runner Athing Mu in 2021. Moreover, her performance set a new facility record, surpassing the previous mark of 49.71 seconds set by Courtney Okolo of Texas in 2016.

The time is also the joint No. 5 fastest time on the U.S. all-time list and fastest performance since 2015 when Allyson Felix ran 49.26.

The women’s 400m final promises to be an intense battle, as Talitha Diggs from Florida also looked comfortable when winning her heat.

Diggs secured her spot in the final by clocking a solid time of 50.78 seconds, winning the fifth and final heat. She is prepared to give her all in the final, where she will face tough competition from four athletes representing Arkansas.

Jermaisha Arnold of Texas A&M triumphed in her heat, qualifying for the final with the third best time of 51.07 seconds.

Meanwhile, Aaliyah Pyatt (51.34), Rosey Effiong (51.53), and Nickisha Pryce (51.43), all from Arkansas, also secured their places in the highly anticipated final. With these impressive performances, Arkansas, the team title favorites, will aim to score big points in this event.
