The first day of the decathlon at the 2023 Götzis Hypomeeting saw a tightly contested competition between the Canadian athletes Damian Warner and Pierce LePage at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event. Warner, the Olympic champion at Tokyo 2021, ended the first day of the decathlon 18 points ahead of LePage, the reigning World Athletics Championships silver medalist.
After five of the 10 contested events, Warner leads the points standings with a total score of 4513 points, while LePage scored 4495 points from his five disciplines to stay within touching distance of his countryman ahead of Sunday second in the competition. Australia’s Ashley Moloney is in third with 4497pts, followed by Sander Skotheim from Norway with 44581pts and Kendrick Thompson of The Bahamas, who is 5th overall with 4405pts.
There were some strong performances throughout the competition, LePage and Kendrick both clocking ran a personal best of 10.28 to edge Warner in the 100m. Moloney improved his personal with a throw of 15.20m in the Shot Put, and then broke the 400m meeting record, set by Estonia’s Erki Nool in 1997, when clocking 46.46 on Saturday.
