Anna Hall, the world heptathlon bronze medalist, showcased her exceptional talent on the opening day of the 2023 Hypomeeting – World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting in Mösle-Stadium, Götzis, Austria. With a total of 4172 points, the 22-year-old American dominated the competition, setting three personal bests in the first four events of the heptathlon.
Hall, making her debut in Götzis this season, began her impressive performance by storming to a 12.75-second finish in the 100m hurdles, setting a personal and meet record right from the start. Her exceptional run set the tone for what was to follow. He score on day one is the second-highest ever mark for a first day behind world record-holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
Continuing her dominance, Hall cleared 1.92m in the high jump on her second attempt, also achieving a personal best. To conclude the day’s events, she achieved a remarkable lifetime best of 22.88 seconds in the 200m race. In the shot put, Hall threw 13.90 meters, placing 11th overall. Despite not securing a top ranking in this event, her performance was significant enough to earn her the second spot on her personal career list in shot put marks.
At the end of the first day, Hall held a commanding 236-point lead over her closest competitor. As she looks ahead to the second day of the competition on Sunday, she aims to further extend her lead and set a new personal record.
Following closely behind Hall in second place is Adrianna Sułek of Poland, the European silver medalist, who recorded an impressive 3936 points. Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Great Britain, the Hypomeeting champion in both 2014 and 2019, currently sits in third place with 3930 points, trailing Sułek by only six points.
Anouk Vetter, the reigning title winner in Götzis from the 2022 edition and Olympic silver medalist, currently occupies the seventh position after four events, accumulating 3810 points. The Dutch star will be looking to make a strong push on Sunday to secure a place on the podium.
Meanwhile, Hall’s compatriots from the United States, Taliyah Brooks and Annie Kunz, hold the 10th and 11th positions, respectively. Brooks ended the first day with 3789 points, while Kunz tallied 3754 points.
