
LOS ANGELES, Calf. (May 26) – Canadian hammer thrower Camryn Rogers broke the Canadian national record and beat world champion Brooke Andersen with a remarkable throw of 78.62 meters at the 2023 USATF LA Grand Prix held at the prestigious UCLA Drake Stadium in Los Angeles on Friday.
Rogers, who won the silver medal at the Oregon22 World Championships last summer, started the competition strongly with an impressive mark of 75.15 meters. After the second round, she found herself in second place behind DeAnna Price, the American record holder.
However, Rogers saved her best for the fifth round, where she delivered a lifetime best throw with 257-11 feet to secure the victory.
In addition to her record-breaking throw, Rogers displayed consistent performance throughout the competition. She recorded distances of 71.19m, 73.38m, and 72.07m in the second, third, and fourth rounds, respectively. Read more: How to watch the 2023 USATF Distance Classic?
Meanwhile, Brooke Andersen, the reigning world champion and current world leader, entered the competition as the favorite after her outstanding performance of 80.17 meters in Tucson, Ariz., on May 20. However, the American struggled early on before managing to throw 76.06 meters in the fifth round, elevating her position to second place.
DeAnna Price, the 2019 world champion from the United States, showcased her skills by achieving a season-best throw of 75.89 meters, earning her the third-place spot. Price demonstrated her consistency with notable marks of 75.45m and 75.89m in the second and third rounds, respectively.
Despite opening with a strong throw of 73.23 meters, Janee Kassanavoid, the world bronze medalist from the United States, was unable to surpass her initial mark and ended fourth.
