Who won the 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Championships?

CLOVIS, Calif. — The 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships concluded at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, California, with Air Force and Colorado State emerging as champions in their respective categories. The three-day championship, hosted by Fresno State, took place from Thursday, 11 May through Saturday, 13 May.

Air Force Dominates Men’s Mountain West Points Standings

In the men’s competition, Air Force displayed their dominance by securing their second consecutive Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships and claiming their seventh overall men’s title. The Falcons amassed an impressive 237.5 points, marking the highest team score in the conference since 2006. Their remarkable achievement also accounted for the largest winning margin since 2009.

Colorado State took a distant second place with 170.50 points, trailing Air Force by 67 points. San Jose State secured the third position with 111 points, followed closely by New Mexico with 106.50 points. Utah State and Wyoming earned 73 and 72 points, respectively, rounding out the top teams.

Colorado State Tops Women’s Standings

In the women’s competition, Colorado State triumphed by winning the crown, accumulating 158.4 points after 42 scored events. This victory marked the Rams’ eighth Mountain West outdoor title in program history, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in collegiate athletics.

Head coach Brian Bedard expressed his admiration for his team’s accomplishment, stating, “It’s hard to win championships. A lot of things have to go well, and you have to have the right leadership on your team, and then it all has to line up for you, so I’m just in awe of how hard it is every time a team is able to do it.”

San Diego State, the two-time defending champion, had to settle for the second position in the women’s team standings, amassing 143.2 points. New Mexico claimed the third spot with 101 points, while Fresno State recorded 86 points for fourth place.

San Jose State rounded out the top five with 77 points, showcasing their competitive spirit throughout the championship.

Recognizing exceptional coaching efforts, Air Force head coach Ryan Cole was named the 2023 Mountain West Coach of the Year. Similarly, Brian Bedard received the prestigious title of Mountain West Coach of the Year for his remarkable leadership in guiding CSU to their first title since 2019.
