NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 3) — Day 1 of the 2023 Music City Track Carnival took place on Friday night (2) at the Vanderbilt Track Facility in Nashville. The event, World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, saw a unique blend of professional athletes and aspiring middle and high school athletes, providing an opportunity for the younger participants to mingle with their athletic idols.
KC Lightfoot Breaks American Pole Vault Record
One of the standout performances in the elite category came from KC Lightfoot, who had an impressive showing in the men’s Pole Vault competition. Lightfoot, who finished fourth in the Olympics, cleared a remarkable height of 6.07 meters, breaking the American record and securing the world lead in the process.

Entering the competition at 5.50m, the NCAA Indoor champion from 2021 steadily progressed through the heights, ultimately surpassing the previous American record of 6.06m set by Sam Kendricks in 2019. Kendricks, a two-time World Athletics champion in 2017 and 2019, had held the record until Lightfoot’s exceptional performance.
Lightfoot’s achievement not only broke the American record but also marked an improvement on his previous outdoor personal best of 5.87m. It is worth noting that his indoor personal best stands at 6.00m, highlighting his prowess in the discipline.

In the women’s Pole Vault event, Bridget Williams of the USA emerged as the victor with a season-best clearance of 4.70m. Additionally, in the men’s Shot Put event, Payton Otterdahl, an Olympic finalist representing the USA, showcased his throwing prowess with a winning throw of 21.68m.
