The 2023 Mastercard New York Mini 10K saw a record-breaking performance by Ethiopia’s Senbere Teferi in the pro race, as she successfully defended her title and outpaced the Boston Marathon champion, Hellen Obiri. Below you will find the top results from the 51st edition of the event.
The thrilling competition took place in Central Park on Saturday, and Teferi’s showed exceptional determination to pull off a famous victory against one of the world’s best track and road runners. In the final stretch on Saturday, Teferi unleashed a powerful surge with just 200 meters remaining, leaving Obiri behind and crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 30 minutes and 12 seconds.
Right from the start, Teferi and Obiri broke away from the rest of the field and maintained a solid pace throughout the race. They engaged in a captivating stride-for-stride battle that lasted for six miles, demonstrating their incredible strength and resilience.
However, it was Teferi who made a bold decision to inject a burst of speed into the contest, a move that Obiri couldn’t match. This strategic maneuver ultimately led Teferi to a comfortable victory, maintaining her place in the history of the world’s original women-only road race.
Hellen Obiri, the esteemed Boston Marathon champion and two-time world 5000m champion from Kenya, claimed second place in her debut appearance at the Mini 10K in a time of 30:19.
Completing the podium was Laura Galvan, who achieved the fastest-ever 10K time by a Mexican athlete, finishing with an impressive time of 31:14.
In the American contingent, Emily Sisson emerged as the top performer, securing a commendable fourth-place finish with a time of 31:16. Her remarkable achievement also marked the third-fastest time ever recorded by a U.S. athlete in the 10K race behind Keira D’Amato and Aliphine Tuliamuk.
Notably, D’Amato, the American marathon record holder, finished fifth today in 31:23 seconds, with Emily Durgin, the 2023 BOLDERBoulder champion running 31:35 for seventh, Kellyn Taylor (32:15) in eighth and Emma Grace Hurley (32:32) in 10th, all finished in the top 10 at the 2023 Mastercard New York Mini 10K.
