Brazil’s world 400m hurdles champion Alison dos Santos is set to make a surprise return at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial – Diamond League 2023 meeting in Silesia, on Sunday (16). This comes after his surgery earlier this year, which had potentially ruled him out for the rest of the season.

In this highly anticipated event, dos Santos will be lining up against two of the fastest men this season in the 400m dash – South Africa’s world record-holder Wayde van Niekerk and Zambia’s world leader Muzala Samukonga.

Last season, dos Santos ran a personal best of 44.54 seconds, which contributed to his world-class 46.29 seconds win at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon. The Brazilian athlete is aiming for a time close to 45 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Silesia, although he has not publicly stated a time he’s targeting.
Wayde van Niekerk, the world record holder and 2016 Rio Olympic champion, seems to be returning to his best form. He enters this weekend’s race with the second-fastest time of the season at 44.17 seconds.
The only man faster than the two-time world champion in the 400m this year is Zambia’s 2022 Commonwealth Games and African champion Muzala Samukonga. He clocked a sizzling 43.91 in April and has run 44.25 in Nairobi and 44.49 in Oslo.
The men’s 400m dash at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial – Diamond League meeting in Silesia, on Sunday, will also feature American champion Bryce Deadmon, along with his countrymen Vernon Norwood and Ryan Willie, who have all clocked low 44 seconds this season.
Fans can expect a winning time in the low to mid 44 seconds for this Diamond League race in Poland, setting the stage for an exciting showdown between Alison dos Santos and Wayde van Niekerk.
