
(July 3, 2023) – Ayden Owens-Delerme from Puerto Rico is the early frontrunner in the men’s Decathlon competition at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador. After three completed events on Monday (3), Owens-Delerme holds the lead with 2,674 points.
Owens-Delerme, who finished fourth at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene last summer, took the advantage from the opening events. He blazed through the 100 meters with a time of 10.36 seconds to secure the top spot in the field. The Arkansas standout then won the long jump, leaping a solid 7.54 meters to claim another victory.

This performance contributed an additional 721 points to his overall score, enabling him to enter the evening session with a comfortable 116-point lead over his closest competitor, Yancarlos Hernandez from Cuba, who currently sits in second place with 2,558 points.
The Bahamas’ athletes also made their mark in the competition, with Ken Mullings finishing the first three events with 2,533 points to sit in the third position. Meanwhile, Kendrick Thompson, another athlete representing The Bahamas heads into the second part of the say in fourth spot with 2,516 points.
The battle for the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games Decathlon crown will continue on Monday evening with the High Jump, starting at 6:15 p.m. ET before ending the first day with the 400m at 9:50 p.m. ET.
