Sha’Carri Richardson vs Abby Steiner: USA Championships 200m semifinal

Sha'Carri Richardson will battle against Abby Steiner in the semifinals of the women's 200m at the 2023 USA Championships on Sunday. Gabby Thomas will face Tamara Clark.

EUGENE (July 9) — The Women’s 200m dash on Day 4 of the USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field, University of Oregon, promises to be a thrilling spectacle from the semifinals, as Sha’Carri Richardson and Abby Steiner have been drawn in the same heat. Find live results link below. Gabby Thomas will take on Tamara Clark in the next semis.

Sha’Carri Richardson vs Abby Steiner

In Heat 1, all eyes will be on exciting sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson, the 100-meter champion, who flashed to a wind-aided 21.61 seconds in the heats on Saturday evening. The 23-year-old boasts a personal best of 22.00 seconds and has a wind-legal season’s best of 22.07 seconds.

However, I expect her to go much faster than both of those times today and hope that the wind reading will not be a factor again, as it was on Saturday.

Richardson will face strong competition from the reigning champion and world finalist Abby Steiner, who wasn’t as fast in the heats but has the fastest personal best in the heat at 21.77 seconds. So far this season, Steiner has clocked 22.19 seconds, which she should improve upon as the night progresses.

This semifinal also includes Anavia Battle, who is no stranger to running sub-22 seconds, having clocked a personal best of 21.95 seconds on this same Hayward Field track in 2021. Other notable competitors in semifinal 1 include Twanisha ‘TeeTee’ Terry, Kyra Jefferson, and Candace Hill.

Collegiate star McKenzie Long from Mississippi and high school standout Mia Brahe-Pedersen will also race in this heat.

Gabby Thomas vs Tamara Clark

Meanwhile, Heat 2 is equally competitive. Olympic bronze medalist Gabby Thomas, who ran her personal best of 21.61 seconds to win the Olympic Trials two years ago, headlines the list of starters.

Thomas, who is expected to challenge the likes of Sha’Carri Richardson and Abby Steiner for the national title, will have the company of world championships finalist Tamara Clark, who was impressive when winning her heat last night, as well as seasoned sprinter Jenna Prandini.

Jacious Sears, Caisja Chandler, and Kayla White are also expected to put up strong performances as the battle for places in the final intensifies.

The top three finishers from each semifinal and the next two fastest will make it to the final.
