The following are the World Athletics Championships results from finals only events on Day 1 here at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday, 19 August. The men’s 20km Race Walk, men’s Shot Put, women’s 10,000m and the mixed 4x400m relay, were the finals on the first day.

Spain’s Álvaro Martin opened the medal counts on the first day of competition when he won the men’s 20km race walk with a world-leading time of 1:17:32, beating Sweden’s Perseus Karlström and Brazil’s Caio Bonfim.

Meanwhile, in the field event, USA’s world record holder Ryan Crouser threw a championship record 23.51m to win his second consecutive world shot put title, beat Italian Leonardo Fabbri, who was also impressive with a PB of 22.34m and American Joe Kovacs (22.12m).

In other World Athletics Championships results on day one, the United States mixed 4x400m relay team set a new world record time of 3:08.80, while Ethiopian athletes swept the women’s 10,000m final.
