BUDAPEST – Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the Norwegian middle-distance sensation, is on a mission to upgrade his silver medal from Oregon last summer when he competes in the men’s 1500m heat at the 2023 World Athletics Championships here in Budapest on Saturday.

Ingebrigtsen heads into the Championships in dominating form with a brilliant 3:27.14 and the 22-year-old is poised to do something special here in the coming days. He will also run the 5000m later in the week. – Read more: Day 1: World Athletics Championships start lists, results, streams

Mohamed Katir, who secured a bronze medal at the 2022 world track and field championships, comes as the second-fastest in the world this season. The Spaniard’s recent performance of 3:28.89 in Oslo has made him a strong contender for a strong spot, although he’s not the only one with eyes on the prize.

USA’s Yared Nuguse, the North American record holder, has clocked the third fastest time globally in 2023 and his impressive 3:29.02 in Oslo earlier this year has positioned him as a formidable challenger in this star-studded lineup.

Other strong medal contenders are Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot, the 2019 world champion in Doha, who owns a season’s best of 3:29.08, and his countryman Abel Kipsang, who enters with a season’s best of 3:29.11.

The first round of the 1500m men’s event is set to take place during the afternoon session at 1:05 p.m. ET on Day One on 19 August.
