2023 Pan American U20 Championships Results - Sharon Lisseth Herrera Soto of Costa Rica in the women race walk

Sharon Herrera Soto of Costa Rica secured the first gold medal of the Pan American U20 Championships 2023 track and field by triumphing in the women’s 10,000m race walk event on Friday morning (4) at the Jose A. Figueroa Freire Stadium in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.

Claiming the silver medal was Heather Durrant of the United States, who registered a time of 50:02.61. Renata Cortes Romero of Mexico secured the bronze medal, recording a time of 52:07.23. Talia Green of the United States completed the field, finishing in fourth place with a time of 53:49.82.

Sharon Herrera Soto, who has a personal best of 47:08.86 for the 10,000m race walk, established a commanding lead throughout the race, covering the first 6000m in 10:02.54 and reaching the 8000m mark at 30:03.07.

She maintained a steady pace, enabling her to retain her advantage before accelerating strongly in the final 200m to open up an even larger gap between herself and the rest of the field.
