New Delhi, (Sept. 15) — The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label road race, is set for a thrilling competition as Ethiopia’s 2016 Olympic 10,000m champion Almaz Ayana and Kenya’s world 10,000m silver medalist Daniel Ebenyo lead the preliminary elite entries. Scheduled for October 15, the race is already generating buzz, with both athletes aiming to break course records.

Almaz Ayana is no stranger to the Delhi Half Marathon. She debuted at this distance in New Delhi, clocking a time of 1:07:12.

With world titles in the 5000m and 10,000m from 2015 and 2017 under her belt, Ayana has her eyes set on the Delhi course record of 1:04:46, set by her compatriot Yalemzerf Yehualaw in 2020.

“I’m very excited to run the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon,” said Ayana. “After giving birth and returning among the best athletes globally, I look forward to coming back to the streets of Delhi and trying to be better than ever.”

But Ayana will not have an easy run. She faces stiff competition from fellow Ethiopian Betelihem Afenigus, who has a personal best of 1:06:46. Adding to the challenge is Kenya’s Viola Chepngeno, who has clocked a best time of 1:06:48.

On the men’s side, Daniel Ebenyo is also in the limelight. The Kenyan, who finished sixth at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst in February, has a half marathon personal best of 59:04.

This time is just 11 seconds shy of the Delhi course record of 58:53. “I’m heading to the Indian capital with high expectations,” Ebenyo stated.

Joining Ebenyo are his Kenyan compatriots Roncer Konga, Leonard Barsoton, Isaac Kipkemboi, and Isaiyah Lasoi, along with Ethiopia’s Tesfahun Akalnew. Barsoton and Akalnew, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively in Delhi three years ago, are keen to make it onto the podium in 2023.
