MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 18) — Swiss runner Rémi Bonnet not only defended his Pikes Peak Ascent title but also broke a 30-year-old record, finishing the grueling 13.3-mile race in just 2:00:21. USA’s Sophia Laukli won the women’s race on a busy weekend in the Golden Trail Series.

The victory this weekend by Bonnet was celebrated by spectators and fellow athletes alike, marking a historic moment in the annals of mountain running.

Record-Breaking Performance

Rémi Bonnet’s preparation for the race was meticulous, including sleeping in an altitude tent set at 3,000 meters (just under 10,000 feet) back home in Switzerland.

However, it was a visit to Colorado Custard Company, owned by the previous record-holder Matt Carpenter, that provided the extra motivation. Carpenter urged Bonnet to aim for his 1993 record of 2:01:06, which Bonnet successfully shattered!

Kenya’s Patrick Kipngeno, who finished second set a new course record for ages 30-34. The 30-year-old clocked 2:04:09, improving the previous age group course record of 2:05:04, set in 1995 by Ricardo Mejia.

Meanwhile, American Sophia Laukli was a comfortable winner in the women’s race. Laukli, who was 39th overall, won the women’s section with a time of 2:35:54.
