GRENADA — Maleik Francis of Antigua and Barbuda starred in the opening session of the Carifta Games 2024 on Saturday morning, breaking the U17 Boys’ Javelin Throw championship record with an impressive throw of 68.84 meters.

The 16-year-old athlete came into the competition at Kirani James Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada, with high expectations, even expressing his desire to surpass the 70-meter mark.

Francis began with warm-up throws of 54.06m and 58.70m before launching a record-breaking 68.84m (225′ 10″) on his third attempt, surpassing the previous Carifta Games record of 64.31m set by KeyShawn Strachan of the Bahamas in 2019.
