Brooke Andersen Beats Star-Studded Hammer Throw Field at 2024 USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix

USA's Brooke Andersen emerged victorious in a thrilling women's Hammer Throw competition at the 2024 USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix at UCLA's Drake Stadium on Friday, besting a field that included both former and current world champions.

Brooke Andersen of the United States triumphed in an entertaining women’s Hammer Throw competition at the 2024 USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix held at UCLA’s Drake Stadium on Friday, 17 May. The American standout emerged victorious against a field stacked with both past and present world champions.

The 2022 world champion Andersen faced off against the likes of compatriot and 2019 world champion Deanna Price, as well as reigning world champion Camryn Rogers of Canada.

Andersen, the current world leader with 79.92 meters — threw 77.32m in the second round to secure her win her on Friday evening. The 28-year-old followed this with throws of 77.14m in the third round and had a 75.83m mark in her first attempt.

Price, who initially led after her first-round throw of 73.88m, has to settle for the runner-up spot in the end, despite improving her earlier attempt. The Doha world champion five-year-ago, finished second to Andersen with a season-best mark of 77.16m, achieved in the second round.

In the meantime, Canada’s national record holder and the 2023 world champion Camryn Rogers secured third place with a throw of 75.56m in the sixth round of the contest. The 24-year-old Commonwealth Games champion had entered the competition with a season’s best of 76.30m and was aiming to improve on that mark.

In other women’s competition results, USA’s Janee’ Kassanavoid placed fourth with 72.99m, followed by Finland’s Silja Kosonen with 70.51m. Americans Annette Echikunwoke (70.11m) and Janeah Stewart (66.69m) rounded out the competition.

On the men’s side at the 2024 USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix, meanwhile, Mykhaylo Kokhan of Ukraine, the Olympic Games 4th-place finisher, captured the Hammer Throw title with a third-round mark of 80.33m.

The Netherlands’ Denzel Comenentia set a lifetime best and Dutch national record of 79.09m to take second place, while USA’s Daniel Haugh claimed third with a throw of 76.86m. Fellow American Rudy Winkler finished fourth with a fifth-round effort of 75.62m.
