Thompson has traveled to the Kazakhstan capital in great form for the Astana Meet 2025, having recently opened his season with an impressive 6.48 seconds over 60 meters in a -2.1 m/s headwind outdoors in Spanish Town, Jamaica, on January 18.
A strong lineup is slated to take on the Jamaican in the short sprint, with Canadian sprint star Andre De Grasse leading the charge this weekend. The Tokyo Olympic 200-meter champion will open his indoor campaign at the Astana Meet 2025 and aims to improve his 6.60 seconds personal best from 2014. His quickest time over the distance last year came at the Millrose Games in February when he posted 6.62 seconds at the New York meeting.
Four Jamaicans are also in contention for a podium spot over 60 meters in Astana, including Rohan Watson, Nishion Ebanks—who finished second to Thompson last weekend—and Micheal Campbell.
Meanwhile, the USA’s Chase Jackson, a two-time world champion in the shot put, will contest that discipline at the Astana Meet 2025, while her compatriot Nia Ali, a two-time world indoor champion, will compete in the women’s 60-meter hurdles.
