Organizers confirmed that Thierry Ndikumwenayo has been confirmed to race at the B100 Cursa dels Nassos 2025 in Barcelona on December 31, where he will attempt to break the European 5km road record. The 26-year-old Spaniard is coming off his recent victory at the European Cross Country Championships in Lagoa, Portugal, where he won gold on December 14.
The current European record stands at 12:57, set by France’s Jimmy Gressier in Lille last March. Ndikumwenayo defeated Gressier to claim the European cross country title just two weeks ago. His credentials suggest the record is within reach—he holds a track personal best of 12:47.67 for 5000m, set at the Bislett Games in Oslo last June, and owns the Spanish 5km road record of 13:08.
His 5km road personal best was set at the adizero: Road to Records in Herzogenaurach, Germany, on April 26, 2025, but the Spaniard is in career-best form entering next week’s race.
The Barcelona race starts at 4:20 p.m. local time and features 70 elite athletes from 16 countries, with the event being part of the World Athletics Label Road Races series. The course ranks among the fastest in the world, with four world records and one European record broken over the past three editions. In 2023, Dominic Lobalu set what was then a continental best of 13:12 on the same streets.
Ndikumwenay won bronze at the 2024 championships and claimed victory at the 2023 European Team Championships 5000m in 13:25.48. He also defended his Spanish national 5000m title in 2025 with a time of 13:35.69.
The B100 Cursa dels Nassos 2025 in Barcelona has drawn over 13,000 registered participants and “sold out,” making it a record turnout for the traditional New Year’s Eve event, according to the organizers.
