Belgium’s Jana Van Lent set a new the European record at the Prom Classic 10km in Nice on Sunday morning (4), clocking 30:09 to erase Paula Radcliffe’s previous mark that had stood for 22 years. Radcliffe set the previous women’s mixed race record of 30:21 in 2003. It also bettered the 30:19 Euro mark by Eilish McColgan, set in Manchester, in the women’s only race in 2022.

Van Lent attacked the course from the start, reaching 5km in 14:43. That split ranks as one of the fastest ever recorded by a European woman in road racing. Italy’s Nadia Battocletti holds the European standalone 5km road record at 14:32, while Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands has run 14:38. Only four European women have posted faster 5km times in standalone races than Van Lent’s split on Sunday.

The fastest 10km time recorded by a European woman is 30:05, achieved by Lonah Salpeter of Israel in Tilburg six years ago. However, this record has yet to be ratified by World Athletics.
